Bridges and Crowns
At Tafolla and Rikli Family Dentistry in Colorado Springs, we are committed to keeping your smile in optimal condition, in terms of both appearance and health. A big part of having a healthy smile has to do with functionality. Sometimes decay, cracks, tooth loss, and other damaging occurrences can negatively impact your ability to chew your food effectively and maintain good oral health. To remedy this, we provide both dental bridges and crowns to restore your tooth to its former strength.
Bridges and crowns are both fixed prosthetic appliances, meaning they are not removable like partial and full dentures. They serve to protect your existing teeth while providing functional support to your smile overall.
A crown is used to entirely cover or “cap” the surface of a damaged tooth to strengthen it as well as improve its appearance, shape and texture. Caps can be porcelain, ceramic or a metal alloy, depending on the location of the tooth and size of the crown needed. In the case of a ceramic or porcelain crown, we will match the material to the color of your tooth. We recommend crowns for:
- Large fillings
- Restore a fractured tooth
- Fortifying a weak tooth to prevent a fracture
- Cover a tooth that has had a root canal
- Improve the appearance and functionality of a irregularly shaped tooth
Bridges are used to replace missing teeth thus improving the appearance and overall health of your smile. When you lose a tooth, the neighboring teeth can shift and crowd the space, causing a misaligned bite. To remedy this, a dental bridge is used to fill this space. The two natural teeth around the space are first downsized and covered with crowns. The dental bridge is then cemented to these crowns, serving as a replacement tooth in the space.
