Health and hygiene trends are hot topics these days. There is a growing concern with the ingredients found in modern-day toothpastes and the methods in which they are made and tested. Fortunately, there are several natural alternatives that can have the same bacteria-eliminating and whitening effects.
- Baking Soda: Mix baking soda and water to make a paste, and use it like normal toothpaste. Baking soda has natural whitening properties and also helps prevent bacteria and plaque build-up. Know that over usage may cause the enamel on teeth to dissipate.
- Salt: To avoid damaging your teeth, dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in water, dip your toothbrush in the water and then brush your teeth. Salt strengthens teeth and gums, breaks down plaque that may lead to cavities, and protects against bad breath.
- Coconut Oil: Oil pulling is a safe, natural and effective way to whiten your teeth and prevent bacteria build-up. Swish 1-2 tablespoons in your mouth for 10-20 minutes, a few times per week. Be sure not to swallow any of the oil. This is not a true alternative to toothpaste, but is a healthy and natural way to brighten your smile!
- Charcoal: Dip a clean, wet toothbrush into powdered charcoal and brush in small, gentle circles for 2 minutes. Similar to coconut oil, charcoal cannot be used as toothpaste, but is a safe, healthy and effective way to whiten teeth.
While traditional toothpaste and brushing routines are still highly recommended and encouraged by Colorado Springs dental professionals, adding some natural alternatives to brighten your smile and prevent plaque and bacteria build-up is a great way to extend your oral and overall health.
