The health and appearance of your teeth and mouth are essential to both your self-esteem and how others perceive you. Statistics show that a smile is often the first thing people notice upon meeting others. For this reason, it is important to keep your smile in tip-top shape. Sometimes, this can involve advanced dental procedures. One of the most common cosmetic procedures is the placement of dental implants. Read more below for answers to all your implant related questions.

What are dental implants? Dental implants are metal screws that are surgically placed into your jawbone, below the gums. These screws allow for your dentist to place prosthetic teeth onto them, creating a more radiant and functional smile for the patient. Because these artificial teeth are placed onto a screw that is fused to the jawbone, there is little to no risk of any movement or fall-out. Implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. They work just like your natural teeth!

How do I know if I need implants? Dental implants are the right choice for you if you are missing one or more teeth, often due to decay, trauma or injury. You are likely a good candidate for implants if your jaw and gums are in good health, you are a non-smoker, and if you are a generally healthy person.

What is the process in placing dental implants? Placing an implant is usually completed in two separate visits to the dentist. First, a hole will be drilled into the jawbone and a screw will be placed into the hole. X-rays will then be taken to make sure the screw was placed correctly. In your second visit, your dentist will expose the implant by cutting into the gum, place a healing cap onto the implant, and finish by fusing a false tooth to the screw.

Can I afford implants? Most of the time, the benefits of dental implants far exceed the costs. It is no secret, however, that they are an investment. Ask your dentist about a payment plan, and/or insurance options. Each office will have different payment options.
