At Tafolla & Rikli Family Dentistry, it is our goal to preserve your natural teeth for as long as possible through cleanings, fillings and educating you on proper oral care habits. Natural teeth are stronger and longer lasting than dental implants, dentures, and any other dental appliance. In spite of this, tooth extractions are sometimes necessary in order to preserve the health and comfort of your smile as a whole. As with everything we do here, our doctors and staff are committed to providing you wholehearted care focused on your comfort and individual needs. If we decide after consulting with you that a tooth extraction is necessary, rest assured that we will do everything possible to keep you relaxed and at ease. Common dental issues that may require an extraction include:
- Severe decay
- Crowded or malpositioned teeth
- An infected or abscessed tooth
- Advanced periodontal disease
- Severely fractured teeth
For simple extractions, we will use a local anesthetic to numb the area around the affected tooth so you experience as little discomfort as possible. The tooth will then be loosened using a dental tool called an elevator and removed using forceps. After the tooth has been extracted, one or two stitches may be used to seal the area to facilitate healing.
Following an extraction, it is essential to keep the area clean to prevent infection. We may provide you with a small piece of gauze to bite down on for 20-30 minutes following the procedure while clotting occurs. For the next couple of days, we recommend you avoid brushing the extraction site directly, smoking or vigorously rinsing your mouth. Our doctors may prescribe a medication to help moderate any discomfort.
